Piece of the Pie, created April 4 – August 19, 1998 is 100% pure paint hence it is its own support. Usually we think of a canvas or panel as a painting’s support but that is only in the literal sense of the word. Painting’s supports extend to the distribution system. The distribution system is the vehicle that maintains and creates provenance, interprets, and gives meaning to any particular artwork or art movement. There is no one distribution system per say, only an interdependent mix of many systems: academic-philosophical art schools nestled in colleges, universities, or as stand alone institutions, validating and feeding their own form of orthodoxy to adherents, public / private galleries and trade journals. Each orthodoxy has a unique set of spiritual/intellectual beliefs backing whatever currency it can garner. Paintings are not tied to any associations save what we bring to them. Although we tend to think of the image as solid it appears to be nothing more than a learned, and continously agreed upon and constituted memory.
