Debbie Pike
I was born in the Province of Quebec, in a small fishing village on the Lower North Shore coast, boardering Labrador. Blanc Sablon was my home for the first twenty five years of my life. In 1996 I came to Nova Scotia where I joined the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Martha of Antigonish.
I believe I was born an artist; creating with pencil and paper, paint and brush, at a very young age. As life unfolded so also did my art form. In my chosen life, as a member of a religious community, I am drawn to art expressions of a spiritual nature. Creating Spiritual Art offers me an opportunity to image reality in a personal and unique way, making connections and inviting reflections beyond the horizons of the senses. I have been blessed to be given the opportunity by my religious community to study under the direction of accomplished artists in the Antigonish area. In 2003, I graduated from Saint Francis Xavier University with a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in Religious Studies and minoring in Art. In 2001, I also did a summer study under the direction of Sister Mary Southard csj, Earth Visual Artist.
I was an apprentice in the Art Department of Dr. John Hugh Gillis Regional Highschool under the direction of Mr. Brad Puskas for the past two years. This year, I am taking two art courses at St. F.X. and enjoying some studio time.
I have a strong desire to continue to develop my art form, incorporating the Vision and Values of my Martha way of life, in ministry to God’s people.
