Synergy is perhaps the best words to describe a new, cooperative relationship that has just begun between the Alcove Bistro and Lyghtesome Gallery, two well-known businesses located in downtown Antigonish. These businesses are cooperating on an ongoing show titled “Art at the Alcove” to strengthen our local and regional fabric.

With Lise Roy’s interest in highlighting local produce and Nova Scotia food producers at the Alcove, comes a natural enthusiasm for supporting local visual artists from both the vibrant arts community of Antigonish and the province as a whole. (more…)

New AFFA workshops to choose from!

 

AFFA  (Artists and Families Fostering the Arts) is proud to present a February line up of workshops to choose from. In this series there is a special opportunity to learn drawing from local living treasure Alice Hoskins. Also presenting workshops are local artists Sarah Avmaat, Nancy Turniawan and Fenn Martin. The GAPACC board of directors is pleased to announce four mentorship opportunities for youth in Guysborough, Antigonish & Pictou counties.  The mentorship program is a new initiative which will pair young artists (age 8-18 yrs) with established GAPACC member artists who wish to share their expertise.  We are accepting applications for both mentors and students in all disciplines: music, dance, thatre, film, and visual arts. Friday evening January 29th and Saturday the 30th at Bethany Center in Antigonish a workshop will be led by local artists, Anne Camozzi, Anna Syperek, and Nancy Turniawan. The workshop goal is to share experiences on how creativity nourishes inner space while experimenting with different art forms. No previous experience required for this playful way to release hidden potential in the heart of winter.

November 14th A busy day for Workshops.

A glorious Saturday brought the clay and the artists outside to make pots, at Nancy Turniawan’s home. Six children and two parents were inspired by the clay and the beautiful surroundings. The morning’s work produced original coil, pinch and slab built pots as well as some Christmas presents. At the end of the workshop, one young artist greeted her father by saying, “Come see what mum made!” (more…)

Tempera Tantrum and Figure It Out, this weekend at the StFX Art Department.

GAPACC artist members Nicholas Johnson and Fenn Martin are hosting simultaneous workshops this weekend at the StFX art department in egg-tempera painting techniques and figurative clay sculpture. The workshops are presented through the department of Continuing Education at the university and will run through Saturday.  Running the workshops at the same time is an attempt at creating  a unique, dynamic environment wherein participants can take part in group critiques and think about possibilites for incorporating different media into their own art practice. These workshops are an open and relaxed environment.  No experience required, all tools and materials will be provided.

Visit to the farm and a look at the hens

The AFFA workshop series is officially underway after a wonderful morning workshop Nov 7th in the Ohio Valley. Local Artist and Crafts-person, Fenn Martin opened his studio to 6 keen participants for a sculptural exploration of Violetta the Hen. Violetta sat very still as participants analyzed proportions and textures and produced many one-quarter-scale facsimiles. The morning conversation wondered to topics of chicken feeds, laying as well as breeds of chickens. (more…)

Antigonish Youth art project commences this November with multiple workshops.

Cost of each workshop is only $10 (if parent cannot afford $10 then a smaller fee of $5 will be supplemented at present through donations) Art material costs will vary, but not exceed $5. GAPACC is piloting a three-fold “GAPACC 8 Card-Pack” initiative with the objectives:

- of raising awareness of our local artists

- as a fundraiser for GAPACC

- to assist artists in the promotion of their work

We will be printing in sets of 8 for our “GAPACC 8 Card-Pack” and are preparing packs available for this Holiday Season.
