On Wednesday November 2nd at 8pm in Immaculata Auditorium, Antigonish Performing Arts will present a performance of Joe Sealy’s Africville Suite, along with songs by Joe Sealy. The concert will feature the composer, Joe Sealy, on piano, Paul Novotny on bass, and the renowned gospel, jazz, and blues singer, Jackie Richardson as vocalist and narrator, along with David Burton, drums and Chris Mitchell, saxophone. The attached document gives details.

Earlier in the afternoon, at 2:30there will be a screening of the film, Africville: Can’t Stop Now in room 289 of the Schwartz School of Business.

Antigonish Performing Arts Presents

AFRICVILLE STORIES

Africville Stories is Joe Sealy’s new presentation that builds on his Juno award winning Africville Suite. Africville Stories will present poignant and uplifting new stories about the people and their community. These stories are the ones that you generally don’t hear when people speak of Africville.

Established in 1847 “Africville” was nestled on the shores of the Bedford Basin at the north end of Halifax and was Canada’s oldest black community, until it was raised in the late 1960’s as an “urban improvement” measure. Africville had to overcome a multitude of challenges but managed to survive for more than a century, until the final building was demolished in 1970. The stories surrounding George Dixon, Joe Louis, Portia White and Duke Ellington combine to create the legacy of this unique Canadian community.

Africville Stories tells of this legacy in a narrative and musical journey. The Africville story continues right to the present time with a new tribute composition titled “The Seaview African United Baptist Church”. The re-construction of the church has been discussed for years and it is currently nearing completion on the site of Africville. Its construction is seen as a small step towards compensating the “Africville” community for injustices of the past.

Africville Stories will be performed by award-winning Canadian singer-storyteller Jackie Richardson. Composer/Pianist Joe Sealy, has presented his Africville Suite in concert halls, universities and music festivals across Canada, Denmark, Norway and the USA, Joe Sealy has enjoyed a highly successful career as a musician, composer, recording artist and radio broadcaster. Recently he was appointed to the Order of Canada for his outstanding contributions to the arts

JOE SEALY, pianist and composer

Joe Sealy has enjoyed a highly successful career as a musician, composer, music director and recording artist. He has toured with “Blood Sweat and Tears”, performed with such artists as Joe Williams, Milt Jackson and Veronica Tennant, and has presented his Juno Award-winning “Africville Suite” in Canada, the United States, and Europe. Joe often performs in concert as a soloist with the Nathaniel Dett Chorale and he was also the music director of the highly acclaimed “Tonya Lee Williams Gospel Jubilee” television special and a CBC radio special called “East Coasting”. Joe is president of Triplet Records Inc. and host of the weekly radio show “Joe’s Jazz” on Jazz FM 91 in Toronto. He has recently recorded his original scores for documentary films entitled, “The Little Black School House” and “Directors Speak”. He has also just finished recording his third CD with crooner Colin Hunter. In September of 2010, Joe was invested into the prestigious Order Of Canada, and in October of that year, Joe Sealy and his longtime business and artistic collaborator Paul Novotny released their fifth CD, “Songs”.

JACKIE RICHARDSON, vocalist and narrator

Born in Donora Pa. and raised in Canada from the age of seven, Jackie Richardson is one of Canada’s foremost singers of gospel, blues, and jazz. She is known internationally for her performances on the concert stage, nightclubs, stage, screen and in the recording studio. Her musical career has been enriched by her many live performances including performances with many great musicians including Celine Dion, Maureen Forrester, Anne Murray, Oliver Jones, Martha Reeves, Mavis Staples, and many others. Jackie’s CD, “A Woman’s View Through Child’s Eyes”, which is mainly contemporary jazz, is available at all her of her live performances. Her acting credits include the Dora Ward-winning “Cookin’ at The Cookery – The Music and Times of Alberta Hunter”, for which she won a Dora Award, and Ain’t Misbehavin’. In 2011 Jackie received a Gemini Award for “The Gospel According to the Blues”. A resident of Thornhill, Ontario, Ms. Richardson has received the Canadian Actors’ Equity Lifetime Achievement Award, the Canadian Black Achievement Award, and the Toronto Blues Society Lifetime Achievement Award, Her family brings her much joy and support and one of the greatest blessings has been to perform with her daughter Kim Richardson.

PAUL NOVOTNY, bass

Paul Novotny knows how to make the bass talk. Singers like Jackie Richardson, Holly Cole, Carol Welsman and Molly Johnson would all agree. They have called upon Paul for his melodic and rhythmic style. Paul’s production of Joe Sealy’s Juno Award- winning (1997) “Africville Suite” helped to establish him as one Canada’s best record producers. Paul is also an established Film/TV composer who penned the orchestral theme for (CBC) “The National” in 2001, and in 2004 he wrote the original theme for (CBC) “The Hour” featuring George Stroumboulopoulos. Paul has also written and produced music for feature films and many national radio and TV commercials. As a jazz bass player Paul has performed with Cedar Walton, Geoff Keezer, Junior Mance, Don Thompson, Tommy Banks, and others. Since 1994, Paul has been the vice-president of Triplet Records Inc., the record label that he co-owns with his music and business partner Joe Sealy. Recently Sealy & Novotny released their fifth CD entitled “SONGS”, which features nine original songs with guest performances by Dan Hill, Jully Black, Ranee Lee, Jackie Richardson and Barbra Lica. Paul is also a professor at Humber College, School of Creative and Performing Arts in Toronto.

CHRIS MITCHELL, saxophone.

Kitchener-born Chris has worked on numerous television, radio and jingle productions including countless live shows in a variety of venues. His well-rounded and diverse style enables him to be proficient in a number of musical genres. His extensive experience as both an arranger and composer culminated in the production of his first solo instrumental album, “Collage”. This record was recognized nationally, resulting in three East coast Music Award nominations, winning Jazz Artist of the Year in 1995. In July of 1998, Chris released his second solo recording entitled “The Witches of Redbeard”, which resulted in an invitation to perform at the 1999 Montreal Jazz Festival. At the festival the Chris Mitchell Quintet was the recipient of the prestigious “Prix De Jazz duMaurier”. This led to a full length compact disc titled Spectrum, which was released in the spring of 2000. Spectrum received rave reviews nationally. In December of 2005 Chris was a special guest at The Havana Jazz Festival. In May of 2007 Chris released his 4th CD entitled “ton-ic” . This was a collaborative work with the late Doug Riley, Jamie Gatti, and David Burton. Currently a permanent resident of Nova Scotia, Chris is a Professor of Saxophone and a Jazz Theory/Improvisation Educator at Dalhousie University.

DAVID BURTON, drums

David has a vast array of recording projects to his credit as composer, producer, musical director and studio musician. He is featured on countless profile endeavours covering a full spectrum of live events, studio recordings and CBC Radio. David excels at versatility – performing all styles of music from jazz to Latin to classical with impeccable timing and intuitive creativity. His career has taken him around the world, backing Canadian artists like Rita MacNeil, Natalie MacMaster, Alannah Miles and Ian Thomas, to name a few. He has also had the pleasure of performing live with great artists like Tony Bennett, Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald. David is well established in the jazz world and has showcased his talents at festivals in Montreal, Havana, Portugal, and at home in Halifax. He has received a number of awards including Best Live Jazz CD “HavanaFax Live” (East Coast Music Awards) and Best Instrumental Recording “Collage” (East Coast Music Awards). There will be refreshments and entertainment, as well as an opportunity to meet the artists.

This free event is a great way to kick off Highland Games week. Enjoy exhibits by regional artists including members of L’Arche Horizons Program and area youth. Music will be provided by Nicole Broussard and Alexandre Calestagne. The opening will also feature the presentation of two awards for outstanding Community Arts Supporters.

The GoArts exhibit will be open during library hours: 9-5 Saturday and Mondays, 9-9 Tuesday to Friday until the July 16.

A demonstration and workshop program is scheduled for the duration of the exhibit. These include: Ruth Young’s drawing, ink brush painting and watercolour workshops, Janette Fecteau and Arden Powell’s batik demonstrations, and, Kara Grant and Mary Beth Adam’s quilting demonstration. In addition, Nancy Turniawan, Murray Gibson and Andrew Murray will be working on their commissioned pieces for the People’s Place Library.

This is a great opportunity to meet local artists and to let them share with you their knowledge and enthusiasm about their craft. Visit GoArts 2011 and become a part of this artistic community!

Antigonish Culture Alive is a non-profit, volunteer organization dedicated to promoting excellence in art practice and raising awareness of the arts in our region. The GoArts annual juried exhibit of members’ art is one of Antigonish Culture Alive’s most important and visible events. This year we are thrilled to be holding the exhibit at the newly built Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library. GoArts is made possible by NS Dept. of Communities, Culture & Heritage, The Town of Antigonish, MacLeod Group, AA Munro Insurance, McDonald’s Restaurants, Central Supplies, and Drs. John Hamilton and Minoli Amit.
