Artist and ACA member Murray Gibson designed this piece in collaboration with L’Arche Antigonish artists, and has been working on this in the library since it opened in May 2011. As the tapestry was woven the completed sections were rolled under, so while we could follow the progress of the section being worked we could never see the completed sections.

The unveiling will be a surprise and a celebration for all. We encourage you to come out for this wonderful opportunity. L’Arche artists and friends will surely be in attendance and it is not to be missed.

The Antigonish Performing Arts Series continues this Saturday, November 12th with a concert by the Dinuk Wijeratne Trio at 8pm in Immaculata Auditorium. Dinuk will appear together with the renowned accordionist, Joseph Petric and percussionist Nick Halley. A video may be seen at:

Dinuk Wijeratne
A truly versatile artist, Sri Lankan-born Dinuk Wijeratne divides his time between composing, conducting, and piano performance.

Dinuk made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2004 as a conductor, composer and pianist, performing with Yo Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble. A second Carnegie appearance followed in 2009, alongside tabla legend Zakir Hussain. Dinuk has composed specially for almost all of the artists and ensembles with whom he has performed; to name a few: Tim Garland, John Dankworth, Nikki Iles, Julian Argüelles, Victor Mendoza, Ed Thigpen, Pandit Ramesh Misra, Adrian Spillett, David Jalbert, Kevork Mourad, Mayookh Bhaumik, Christina Courtin, MIR, the Apollo Saxophone Quartet, 4-Mality Percussion Quartet, the NY Kathak Ensemble, the New Juilliard Ensemble, Onelight Theatre, and Symphony Nova Scotia.

Dinuk grew up in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, before taking up composition studies at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM), Manchester, UK. In 2001, he was invited by composer John Corigliano to join his studio at New York’s Juilliard School. Dinuk’s Chamber Concerto ‘About Sankhara’ (2003) was commissioned by the New Juilliard Ensemble and was the first work by a Sri Lankan composer to be performed at Lincoln Center. Dinuk was also composition fellow at the 2002 Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo, Japan, and was appointed Artist-in-Residence by the Performing Arts Foundation at International House for the 2003/4 season. Conducting studies followed at New York’s Mannes College of Music. A firm believer in the universality of music, Dinuk founded the cutting-edge NYC-based multimedia group NEOLEXICA in 2003 together with Turkish DJ Umut Gokcen, Silk Road Ensemble artist Kevork Mourad from Armenia, and Syrian clarinetist Kinan Azmeh (a soloist with Daniel Barenboim’s Divan Orchestra for Arabs and Israelis). The quartet synesthetically combine live illustration with a uniquely multinational blend of acoustic & electronic music.

With appearances this season across North America and the Middle East, Dinuk and Kinan are currently releasing their debut album entitled ‘Complex Stories, Simple Sounds’, a collaboration of original works with clarinetist Kinan Azmeh.

Dinuk is returning for his fourth season as Music Director of the Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra. He has conducted the National Arts Centre Orchestra and appeared many times with Symphony Nova Scotia during his 3-year appointment as Conductor-in-Residence. The Canada Council for the Arts recently awarded Dinuk the 2008 Jean-Marie Beaudet award for orchestral conducting. He is also the recipient of Juilliard and Mannes scholarships; two Countess of Munster composition grants; the Sema Jazz Improvisation Prize; the Soroptimist International Award for Composer-Conductors; and the Sir John Manduell Prize – the RNCM’s highest student honor. His music and collaborative work embrace the great diversity of his international background and influences.

Joseph Petric
Antigonish audiences will fondly remember past concerts featuring this amazing accordionist, Joseph Petric has inspired audiences worldwide with his performances. A JUNO nominee and laureate of the CBC National Radio and BBC3 Radio 3 auditions and Prix Opus Best Recording laureate, he has appeared at London’s Southbank, Washington’s Phillips Collection and Manhattan’s Baruch series where he was hailed for his “…luminous command, authenticity..and nuanced collaboration…”. In 2000 he was invited by the Tanglewood Festival to participate in Berio’s 75th birthday celebrations. In a performance of the complete Berio Sequenzas, given by leading international soloists and members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Seiji Ozawa Hall, the Boston Globe noted his performance to be one of “extraordinary eloquence… the most moving of all the Sequenzas”.

A dedicated recitalist, chamber artist and concerto soloist he has enjoyed the support of benefactors such as the Koussevitsky Foundation, Swedish Reikskonzerter, the Ontario Arts Council, the Canada Council for the Arts and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. He has also toured for England’s John Lewis Partnership and Columbia Artists. As a concerto soloist, he has appeared with the BBC Concert Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Sweden’s Camerata Nordica, Concertante di Chicago, the Boston Modern Orchestra, the Orchestra Symphonique de Quebec, the Vancouver CBC Chamber Orchestra, Montreal’s Nouvel Ensemble Moderne and Symphony Nova Scotia. In 2010 he launched a new symphonic concept with his show Accordion on Fire, performing three concertos with the Victoria Symphony Orchestra in its Odyssey Series.

Joseph’s recordings include more than 30 titles, among them Berio’s Accordion Sequenza (Naxos), the Koprowski Accordion Concerto with the Toronto Symphony (CBC5000 Series), Schubert’s Die Winterreise with tenor Christoph Pregardien and Pentaèdre (ATMA); the Bach Trio Sonatas with oboist Normand Forget (Odeofon,) as well as solo works of Antonio Soler, J.S. Bach, C.P.E. Bach (Analekta,) Domenico Scarlatti and Bernhard Molique (Astrila Records.) Passionate about community and educational outreach, he has offered workshops, master classes and recitals at venues as diverse as London’s Royal Academy, Sibelius Academy, the Rimouski Conservatoire and public school concerts in Canada and Europe.

A champion of a new music and the dedicatee of more than 220 new works, he was the first instrumentalist recipient of the Friend of Canadian Music Award 2005 and cited as a “tireless, and legendary collaborator.” He was recently inducted as Ambassador of Canadian Music at the Canadian Music Centre’s 50th anniversary gala at Canada’s National Arts Centre in Ottawa.

Nick Halley
Born in New York City, and raised in the grounds of the city’s Cathedral of St. John the Divine (where his father, Paul Halley, was Director of Music), Nick Halley’s earliest memories are of the rich variety of music there, from sacred choral to contemporary jazz and African dance.

These early influences proved to be lasting. Nick majored in jazz and classical percussion at Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan and spent a year studying and performing in Brazil prior to returning to New York City to The New School University’s jazz and contemporary music program. There he studied with Amir Ziv, Billy Hart, and Jamey Haddad, and entered into long-lasting musical friendships with some of the great young musicians in New York’s ever-evolving jazz scene.

Nick tours and records with groups ranging in style from traditional Scottish and Irish to gospel, jazz, Brazilian and popular music, including The Chris Norman Ensemble, various Paul Halley ensembles, and his own recently-formed Nick Halley Band. Nick has performed with artists such as Oscar Castro-Neves, Maucha Adnet, Suzie LeBlanc, Theresa Thomason, Rhonda Larson, Café, and Jamey Haddad.

Nick worked for three years (2005-2008) as Assistant Conductor of Connecticut’s acclaimed children’s choir Chorus Angelicus. While there he founded and directed The Gentlemen of Chorus Angelicus, a choir designed to engage the boys of the senior choir, along with those from its training program in the experience of singing services and concerts together with their older peers in the alto, tenor, and bass sections.

When not on tour, Nick is currently based in Halifax, Nova Scotia apprenticed to his father as organist and choral conductor at the University of King’s College and the Atlantic School of Theology. In January 2010 Nick started the King’s Chorus for students and faculty at the University and in February of the same year launched the Capella Regalis Men and Boys Choir based out of the University as well. Nick teaches private lessons and directs workshops in percussion, music theory, and Brazilian, North African, and South Indian rhythm.

In July of 2008, Nick released his debut recording, Barnum Hill, featuring the Nick Halley Band in performances of Nick’s own compositions as well as those of other members of the Band.

Antigonish Performing Arts Presents

AFRICVILLE STORIES

Africville Stories is Joe Sealy’s new presentation that builds on his Juno award winning Africville Suite. Africville Stories will present poignant and uplifting new stories about the people and their community. These stories are the ones that you generally don’t hear when people speak of Africville.

Established in 1847 “Africville” was nestled on the shores of the Bedford Basin at the north end of Halifax and was Canada’s oldest black community, until it was raised in the late 1960’s as an “urban improvement” measure. Africville had to overcome a multitude of challenges but managed to survive for more than a century, until the final building was demolished in 1970. The stories surrounding George Dixon, Joe Louis, Portia White and Duke Ellington combine to create the legacy of this unique Canadian community.

Africville Stories tells of this legacy in a narrative and musical journey. The Africville story continues right to the present time with a new tribute composition titled “The Seaview African United Baptist Church”. The re-construction of the church has been discussed for years and it is currently nearing completion on the site of Africville. Its construction is seen as a small step towards compensating the “Africville” community for injustices of the past.

Africville Stories will be performed by award-winning Canadian singer-storyteller Jackie Richardson. Composer/Pianist Joe Sealy, has presented his Africville Suite in concert halls, universities and music festivals across Canada, Denmark, Norway and the USA, Joe Sealy has enjoyed a highly successful career as a musician, composer, recording artist and radio broadcaster. Recently he was appointed to the Order of Canada for his outstanding contributions to the arts

JOE SEALY, pianist and composer

Joe Sealy has enjoyed a highly successful career as a musician, composer, music director and recording artist. He has toured with “Blood Sweat and Tears”, performed with such artists as Joe Williams, Milt Jackson and Veronica Tennant, and has presented his Juno Award-winning “Africville Suite” in Canada, the United States, and Europe. Joe often performs in concert as a soloist with the Nathaniel Dett Chorale and he was also the music director of the highly acclaimed “Tonya Lee Williams Gospel Jubilee” television special and a CBC radio special called “East Coasting”. Joe is president of Triplet Records Inc. and host of the weekly radio show “Joe’s Jazz” on Jazz FM 91 in Toronto. He has recently recorded his original scores for documentary films entitled, “The Little Black School House” and “Directors Speak”. He has also just finished recording his third CD with crooner Colin Hunter. In September of 2010, Joe was invested into the prestigious Order Of Canada, and in October of that year, Joe Sealy and his longtime business and artistic collaborator Paul Novotny released their fifth CD, “Songs”.

JACKIE RICHARDSON, vocalist and narrator

Born in Donora Pa. and raised in Canada from the age of seven, Jackie Richardson is one of Canada’s foremost singers of gospel, blues, and jazz. Her musical career has been enriched by her many live performances including performances with many great musicians including Celine Dion, Maureen Forrester, Anne Murray, Oliver Jones, Martha Reeves, Mavis Staples, and many others. Her acting credits include the Dora Ward-winning “Cookin’ at The Cookery – The Music and Times of Alberta Hunter”, for which she won a Dora Award, and Ain’t Misbehavin’. In 2011 Jackie received a Gemini Award for “The Gospel According to the Blues”. A resident of Thornhill, Ontario, Ms. Richardson has received the Canadian Actors’ Equity Lifetime Achievement Award, the Canadian Black Achievement Award, and the Toronto Blues Society Lifetime Achievement Award, Her family brings her much joy and support and one of the greatest blessings has been to perform with her daughter Kim Richardson.

PAUL NOVOTNY, bass

Paul Novotny knows how to make the bass talk. Singers like Jackie Richardson, Holly Cole, Carol Welsman and Molly Johnson would all agree. They have called upon Paul for his melodic and rhythmic style. Paul’s production of Joe Sealy’s Juno Award- winning (1997) “Africville Suite” helped to establish him as one Canada’s best record producers. Paul is also an established Film/TV composer who penned the orchestral theme for (CBC) “The National” in 2001, and in 2004 he wrote the original theme for (CBC) “The Hour” featuring George Stroumboulopoulos. Paul has also written and produced music for feature films and many national radio and TV commercials. As a jazz bass player Paul has performed with Cedar Walton, Geoff Keezer, Junior Mance, Don Thompson, Tommy Banks, and others. Since 1994, Paul has been the vice-president of Triplet Records Inc., the record label that he co-owns with his music and business partner Joe Sealy. In May of 2007 Chris released his 4th CD entitled “ton-ic” . This was a collaborative work with the late Doug Riley, Jamie Gatti, and David Burton. Currently a permanent resident of Nova Scotia, Chris is a Professor of Saxophone and a Jazz Theory/Improvisation Educator at Dalhousie University.

DAVID BURTON, drums

David has a vast array of recording projects to his credit as composer, producer, musical director and studio musician. He is featured on countless profile endeavours covering a full spectrum of live events, studio recordings and CBC Radio. David excels at versatility – performing all styles of music from jazz to Latin to classical with impeccable timing and intuitive creativity. His career has taken him around the world, backing Canadian artists like Rita MacNeil, Natalie MacMaster, Alannah Miles and Ian Thomas, to name a few. He has also had the pleasure of performing live with great artists like Tony Bennett, Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald. David is well established in the jazz world and has showcased his talents at festivals in Montreal, Havana, Portugal, and at home in Halifax.
