Antigonish, NS . . . The 12th Annual Gathering of the Arts began to take shape into another exciting showcase of local talent as jurying commenced on Thursday, June 18, at the St. Francis Xavier University Art Department.
The annual Guysborough Antigonish Pictou Arts and Culture Council (GAPACC) art exhibition received over 100 submissions this year, a record showing of support representing over 35 local artists who are involved with the community-based organization of the arts. The turn-out impressed the jury of peers who reviewed the submissions from the Nova Scotia arts community, expressing it was difficult to make the final selections to be exhibited during the show.
The accepted pieces will be a representation of all media, including water color, oil, pastel, mixed media, pen and ink, pencil, acrylic, wood, batik and sculpture. All pieces are for sale, which gives the public an opportunity to view and purchase artwork representing this region.
In addition to the record number of submissions, the 12th Gathering of the Arts boasts many new milestones as well. The exhibition will take place in Antigonish at a new location. From July 13 to July 25, the Gathering of the Arts will be featured at the former location of Southern Accents on Main Street and the new location for the Pictou Antigonish Regional Library. The exhibition will then move to the McCarthy Gallery at the Truro Campus of Nova Scotia Community College from August 4 to August 14, the first time Gathering of the Arts has been showcased in Truro.
Gathering of the Arts will also feature a Youth Art Festival for young artists, as well. Students aged 14 to 19 from local schools will feature in the Gathering of the Arts exhibition, as well as take part in workshops instructed by guests artists ranging in mediums from sculpture, high tech art, screen-printing and DJ-ing.
The grand opening of Gathering of the Arts will take place on Monday, July 13, at 7pm on Main Street, Antigonish. The public is invited to enjoy local artwork along with artists and special guests, enjoy refreshments and live entertainment from up-and-coming local musicians.
